Ten billion people and Earth-saving 'human tax diet'

"We are now witnessing big signs of a new geological era. That's equivalent to what happened at the end of the last ice age." This is what Colin Waters, a senior scholar at the British Geological Institute, said in a daily Guardian.

Geologists analyze that the last geological era of the Cenozoic Era, "holocene," is becoming extinct, and a new geological era, "anthropocene," is entering. The cause is the destruction of the environment of mankind. In the future, the Earth will become the sixth extinction due to the massive destruction of the ecosystem committed by mankind and enter a new geological era.

The argument that human activity is bringing a different geological change to the Earth from the previous era, and that the pace of change is accelerating, is gaining momentum. Then, is there any contingency plan for mankind to prevent this? Many scientists stress the need to coexist with species that make up biodiversity while preserving the ecosystem. And one more thing, changing our diet.

Recently, 37 scientists from 17 countries around the world made headlines by announcing a complete diet based on their findings. The EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health, a Swedish private organization, announced a balanced global health meal, gathering opinions from scientists in nutrition, agriculture and the environment. Another name for the diet is the 'Humanity Tax' diet. This means that it is a diet that we should use as a standard to prepare for the future of entering the "humanity tax."

"The way we eat can bring the end of the species," said scientists at the It-Lansik Committee. "Here's a new diet designed to save us." The diet contains solutions to numerous problems that will occur in the near future. In other words, it is a diet that can protect the health of mankind and the earth together. The population is expected to grow to about 10 billion by 2050. As a result, health problems such as food shortages, early death, and increased food production are warning that environmental pollution is becoming more serious. Scientists explain that using this diet as a standard can reduce the number of premature deaths of adults who die from cancer or heart disease by 10 million each year without harming the global environment, and reduce the food crisis.

The "Humanity Tax" diet tells you at a glance where and how much 2,500 calories an adult eats a day. More than 200 grams of fruits and vegetables, 232 grams of whole grains, 50 grams of nuts, and 75 grams of beans are recommended, respectively. On the other hand, red meat is restricted to less than 14 grams per day for animal protein. The diet is similar to the Mediterranean or Okinawa diet, which is well known for long-lived health food.
The scientists stressed that fruits, vegetables and nuts should more than double their consumption, while red meat, refined carbohydrates and sugar should be cut by half. There is also a difference in food that needs to be reduced and increased in each country. In North America, red meat should be reduced by 84 percent from the current level, and Europe needs to eat 77 percent less to get closer to the diet offered by scientists.

Emphasized along with the "humanity tax diet" are "reducing food waste" and "increasing food production per unit area." According to an analysis by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Institute and the Stockholm International Water Research Institute, about 1.8 kilograms of grain feed are needed to get 110 grams of beef. The problem of greenhouse gases emitted by the livestock industry is also serious. As scientists point out, it is necessary to get more food from the same area, reduce greenhouse gases, and reduce meat consumption for human health.
