Thinking about the packaging and the environment.

The "ethical consumption" trend is also spreading in the food industry. It's not just eating and drinking. Consumers are also choosing more eco-friendly products for food packaging.

Inova Market Insight and Mintel, global food and beverage market research firms, cited eco-friendly packages as one of the 2019 food and beverage trends. More sustainably, the use of environmentally-produced packaging containers minimizes environmental pollution, restores soil health, and emphasizes ecological circulation.

"In the past, carbon dioxide emissions have been emphasized in packaging, but biodegradability and soil decomposition have been emphasized in the past two to three years," said Choi Jeong-Kwan, CEO of Inobamaket Insight Korea office.

The global food industry is already in the midst of a zero-plastic movement. In October last year, the EU passed a bill banning the use of several disposable plastics from 2021 to cotton swabs, plastic straws, and forks. With European countries set to implement the bill, the removal of plastic goods is proceeding rapidly around the world.

In Korea, interest in the environment increased due to fine plastic issues last year, and the ban on the use of disposable paper cups served as an opportunity to raise interest in eco-friendly packages.

■ What is the biodegradable balance of 'green materials'?

Recently, interest in food containers made from eco-friendly materials " biodegradable resin" has been increasing both inside and outside the country.

According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, biodegradable resin refers to a resin that is easily decomposed by biological processes caused by microorganisms. finally decomposes into water, carbon dioxide, methane gas, or biodegradable organic matter according to environmental conditions.

The biodegradable resin can be used like regular plastic, but it decomposes under appropriate conditions, helping to solve the plastic waste problem. What is especially decomposed is harmless to nature.

The type of biodegradable resin is opalescent. Starch, cellulose, chitin, polylactide (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and poly e-caprolactone (PCL). It can be used alone or mixed with other resins.

The biodegradable resin most commonly used for food appliances, containers, and packaging is PLA (polylactide). PLA products are materials that have equivalent characteristics to ordinary plastics during use but are 100% biodegradable by microorganisms upon disposal. The 2019 Bearista Savings Bank, which was recently introduced by Star Bus Korea, was also made using PLA.

In Korea, not only biodegradable resin is used, but also eco-friendly containers that are developed with biodegradable additives are emerging.

Instead of conventional plastic, Teco Plus introduced "Tecoplastics" made from nature-friendly resources such as coconuts and natural minerals. It can be used in various food containers such as take-out cups, lids, and lunch boxes. "We have developed a material that reduces the use of existing petroleum materials by mixing coconut and minerals and naturally reduces carbon dioxide generation," said Hwang Geun-ha, manager of Tekoplex.

■ Things to Know About Eco-friendly Containers

Many believe that eco-friendly containers that use biodegradable resin as raw materials will be harmless to the human body as they are harmless to the environment. However, plastics that use biodegradable resin as a raw material also contain a versatile type of additive or degradation product like regular plastics. For this reason, different criteria for determining human hazards are applied, even if they are harmless to the environment.

Also, it may only be used for food purposes if it complies with the applicable material-specific reference standards of food appliances, containers, and packaging work.

Various kinds of microorganisms participate in the biodegradation process. The biodegradation speed also varies depending on the type of microorganism, the temperature of decomposition and humidity, and the presence of air.

No breakdown occurs during use, which some consumers are concerned about. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, if biodegradable resin products are used for their intended use, decomposition does not occur under normal usage conditions. You can also use a microwave if you have a service mark.

However, you need to be careful when you put hot food. biodegradable resin products generally have a temperature of 80 degrees or less. It is essential to check the heat-resistant and cold-resistant temperature as the form of the product can be altered if food is held at a temperature of more than 80 degrees, such as boiling water.

Care must also be taken for storage. The biodegradable resin, like ordinary plastics, contains ultraviolet stabilizers but can cause photovoltaic degradation, such as aging, discolored, or cracked by direct sunlight of the sun. It's better to keep it in a place without direct sunlight.

Although there is a high interest in eco-friendly containers and consumer demand is increasing, consumers and the industry have no standards for eco-friendly. "When consumers choose eco-friendly containers, they should examine whether they are safe enough to be reliable and whether they are minimizing natural damage by reducing environmental hormones and carbon dioxide emissions," said Park Hyung-Chul, head of Shinhyo Industry, which produces eco-friendly containers.
