Five Ways Whales Protect Us from Climate Crisis

Whales must be wonderful creatures by their very existence. But very few people know that this giant creature has a tremendous impact on the Earth. From now on, I'm going to tell you five amazing stories about whales that you didn't know about

  • .long life span

In the meantime, we have thought of turtles as the longest living animals. But there are some species of whales that have a long lifespan as turtles. The giant whale, the largest living creature on Earth, can live for more than 100 years. Also, Arctic whales, which are only found near the North Pole, live up to 250 years old. It's a giant body that's been swimming the ocean for more than two centuries. Whales are more beneficial to the Earth the longer they live. Why?

  • Whale = Underwater Tree?
Whales absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide throughout their lives. Layers store carbon dioxide between fat and protein in the body. Also, whale feeding and defecating activities help form algae that absorb carbon dioxide. According to a recent study, a whale acts like thousands of trees to prevent a climate crisis. Imagine a huge forest floating in the ocean. Isn't that cool?

  • Dung
Whale poop is a fertilizer that makes the sea fertile. It allows a tiny organism called phytoplankton to thrive. Phytoplankton absorbs atmospheric carbon during photosynthesis and stores it in the body. There's a study that says that the oxygen produced by phytoplankton is more than half of the total oxygen on Earth. Not only that, but phytoplankton is the basis of the seafood chain.

  • Marathon runner? Divers!
Whales, mammals, come to the surface periodically for breathing. But the feeding activity is underwater. Some species eat huge amounts of plankton and krill in shallow waters, while others dive thousands of meters to eat squid. In the process, there is a cycle of nutrients in the sea. It connects the sun-lit surface to a dark, deep ecosystem.

Whales travel between feeding and breeding sites throughout their lives, often thousands of kilometers apart. The periodic diversion of these enormous distances means connecting pieces of the earth that are far away from each other. Whales born in warm tropical waters eat krill in icy Antarctic waters. By going up and down the water and the deep sea, and leaving excrement across the distant sea, whales serve to spread sea nutrients.

  • Death
Whales become new ecosystems when bodies sink into the ocean floor. It forms a small world where all kinds of strange, mysterious deep-sea creatures live, from worms to sharks. First of all, whales sink deep into the sea with carbon dioxide in their bodies even when they die and keep it safe for hundreds of years.

Whales make the sea and the Earth healthy and resilient throughout their lives. On the other hand, humans have dried up numerous species of whales over the past hundreds of years to get oil and meat. It's been damaging the entire planet by pushing whales into crisis.

Whales are still threatened with survival. Commercial whaling is almost over, but it's the plastic and chemical contamination, the discarded nets, the whales that are victimized by congestion, ships and industries, and military disturbances.
